It's like it really is part of your life. Peter: That was the Milwaukee Bucks. And as Marc kind of ventured out over a decade ago . Peter: Wow. And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. Some people dont like to hear that anymore. For Feigin, Lasry, Edens, Dinan, head coach Jason Kidd and the entire organization, Antetokounmpo, born and raised in Greece to Nigerian immigrants, is a business unicorn. But yet, still being leaders with more than a vote movement, just amazing, amazing. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. By form, I think your strength of your network is as strong and as smart as you can possibly be. Michael Red: After knowing you for the last six years, personally, two qualities stand out: Extremely funny and extremely generous. Whether it's police reform, whether it's incarceration, whether it's education, whether it's food desert. Welcome to the impact podcast, Peter. But it's also, listen like I wish, I have patience for nothing, and I think what I'm learning and trying to get a grip of is like how do we chip away over every issue of social justice. Michael Red: One thing that impresses me about our organization is how diverse it is. Do you want to be in a place where people are having fun and were trying to get rid of all the toxic. I'm so proud for his development. Theyre the worst. Now youve been to the top of the mountain. They all had the space, they're at Disney, they have all the amenities. We had weekly calls. "We didn't have much time," he says. You start with whats the goal? Peter Feigin: And then I think, the bigger picture is we really have to accelerate becoming the world's team. And I believe in my heart that the Bucks were real leaders in that moment. You got into really like, "How do we create resources for people to just talk about how they're feeling, about how they vent, about how do they get support for their lives?" By the way I never wouldve said this seven years ago, I think you have to be involved. But youve not only lived the dream but also climb to the mountain and very few win a championship. But talk about that dynamic leading through that. And how did that all come about? This kind of like, "Why are we looking at other people's metrics? We hired an unbelievable CFO. How do you get people who care? So that that's been kind of part of my learning is like, "How do we create a system that we're in a much better place six months from now and a much better place 12 months and a much better place three years from now that we've shown change in metrics and results and everything like that. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? How do we get the people to try and start the journey to professionalize and really build a gold standard operation. That's the way we think about it. Some guys I went to high school with some guys who played college, and I leaked it at the opportunity at that game on a Saturday morning and everybody went absolutely nuts because for better or worse, Im kind of being your average guy, you do not think Peter Fiegins going to have the opportunity to become an NBA president to do it and these jobs are so rare and so incredible. We spend a lot of our time really trying to figure out what are the levers to move the revenue. We heard it straight from. Go to the Cluckery. And Peter, now is the President of the Milwaukee Bucks and has done an incredible job over the years with the Bucks since he's landed in Milwaukee. Peter: We knew each other. Now just, we've talked about your background. And obviously, you have dealt with a little bit of this with Sterling Brown a couple years ago, so you guys happened to prepare for this a little bit. Talk about having arguably the greatest player in the world on your team. In a 10 year phase, I started with a startup with Marquis Jet, with Kenny Dichter and Jesse Itzler who started the business and came from sports. You talk about advantages, just the osmosis at our dinner table was I knew in two seconds like I wanted to be in business. People who do argue are kind of not allowed back.. I never wanted to be that guy with the goggles and the knee brace and the tucked-in shirt being like, Hey! And a diverse community gives us diverse thought, gives us better outcomes. Peter Feigin Title: President Organization: Milwaukee Bucks Previous experience: Chief marketing and revenue officer of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group; president and chief operating. I don't know how to talk about that other than like my dad was like my hero and he was selfless and kind of quietly just did anything for anybody and kind of was like that's how I had value for him. But I think, those are the things that like, yes, you can always pay people. We were sitting brainstorming like, how do we keep people employed? But then theres, in this group weve got 300 full-time people and 250 of them are involved in volunteering. There's no living room, there's no central square, there's no big public park kind of in the middle of the city. Peter Feigin: Khris Middleton, as you can imagine, nobody understands that players have been having to get COVID tested twice a day and you got to come into our training center and we have parking spaces. We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. Our dinner table conversation. We don't have a business, not sure when we will have a business. You got to be someone that actually that enjoys being here and part of the family culture and part of an organization. Peter: Probably, now with the way interesting curriculum has expanded and fun case studies and like where schools are. John: How about the issue of when people put on those special glasses now, and they can watch a game in 3D or whatIm so out of it a little bit, Peter, technologically speaking, but the young people are talking about the future of watching sports is were going to be able to, is going to be eventually cameras court side, and were going to be able to watch it and feel like were sitting court side and youre at a bucks game. Post-acquisition were in an interesting time in life where my dad had been ill for a while and there was no way I was going to move to Milwaukee or take, even have the prospect of taking a job because I wanted to stay in New York and be with my father. I think if nothing else, it changes the awareness, the sophistication, and the business operations of the way players will position themselves and the way theyll market themselves. Jesse the Jet, no question. Its like you think about what the culture of community is. Michael Red: And this was a decade long process, Peter? Peter Feigin: That's an interesting statement. A lot of fun. So, it's a little bit kind of nuts and delusional to go through thinking like you can kind of accomplish or solve or get anything done, but it's kind of the way I've kind of attacked life in a big way. He was a truly taught consumer products, marketing, and operations guy, was okay. And Dan Feigin still has keys to Trevors gym, which he has been putting to use by himself. She couldn't be more supporting from everything. Thats the relentless, thats the difference I think of what success is. It's about doing things for the right reasons. It keeps on changing, but we've got to be able to pivot and understand when we're out of balance. Peter: Which like, by the way, might evolve to 20%, 30% of an arena at some point. Michael Red: I don't know if that's the responsibility of the organization to have that permeate throughout the city, but have you seen a shift in Milwaukee, even when it comes to people coming together from different races and different creeds? Peter: Yeah, it is a combination of both because you really, I had a real rare opportunity to get out of sports and work outside of the sports industry for wealth. But the overarching is how do we maintain kind of championship caliber excellence, like across the business and across the team. His rise from recruiter's president, handing out parking tickets in the Buck's lot, working for social justice in the epicenter of the global movement, and his unique leadership style. And maybe 15 years ago, when I was working in Madison Square Garden, my brother was in a parent conference with Mark Lasry and Mark might have mentioned that he wants to look at some teams. Thats just my view, Lasry said. But I think, if you sprinkle in the effort and the care, it affects change. He ran companies like Alma and Posner and cosmetics. I wander around the house, Feigin said in a recent telephone interview. Talk about that.
